Widespread flooding at Lake Coeur d'Alene

01:31 PM PDT on Wednesday, May 21, 2008

KREM.com

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - Widespread flooding is now reported along Lake Coeur d'Alene in Northern Idaho as swollen rivers flow downstream.

Many homeowners with lakefront property are using sandbags to prevent water from flowing into basements and several boat launches along lake are also closed.

As of Wednesday morning, the lake level was approaching three feet above flood stage. Low-lying areas such as Blackwell Island and Harbor Island on the Spokane River are most at risk.

Flooding along Cougar Bay on Lake Coeur d'Alene.

High water volume has caused the lake to back up into the Highway 3 area causing the Coeur d' Alene River and the Chain Lakes to flood from Cataldo to Harrison.

Shoshone County

Shoshone County residents affected by the boil order issued by the Central Shoshone County Water District will be able to pick up bottled water at fire stations in Kellogg and Osburn.

One gallon jugs of drinking water, packaged three to a case, will be distributed from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the following stations:

* District 1 Fire Station; 921 E. Mullan in Osburn
* District 2 Fire Station; 14 W. Market; Kellogg

Benewah County
The St. Joe River remains well above flood stage at St. Maries, Idaho and concern is growing over the stability of dikes that protect the town. Some "bubbling" along the dikes has been reported, which is water seeping through the dikes. The St. Joe River is currently four feet above flood stage and still rising.

Kootenai County

High water has caused the closure of the rails to trails from Enaville to Harrison including the following roads:

* Killarney Lake Road
* Bull Run Road
* Latour Creek Road (the Bureau of Land Management Bridge approximately six miles up Latour Creek Road has been washed out)
* CCC Road
* River Road between Highway 3 and Tamarack Ridge Road
* Loffs Bay Road at Mica Creek
* Rainy Hill Road
* Medimont Road

How to get help

Three north Idaho counties have announced separate public information phone numbers to accomodate community requests for assistance and information.

- Shoshone County flood hotline: (208) 556-1983

- Kootenai County flood hotline: (208) 446-2292

- Benewah County information line: (208) 245-4122

Minor flooding occurring in Inland Northwest
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Rapid snowmelt has lifted the Spokane River and Lake Coeur d'Alene to flood stage, and flood warnings were issued Tuesday for many of the region's waterways.

Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire also declared a washed-out highway in Spokane County an emergency, in hopes of getting federal money for repairs.

Heavy rains that fell in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho on Tuesday "may lead to renewed rises on many of the rivers," the National Weather Service said.

Flood warnings continued on the Kettle, Methow, Moyie, Okanogan, Clearwater and Coeur d'Alene rivers. The St. Joe River was 5 feet above flood stage near St. Maries, Idaho.

Gregoire's declaration applies to a 1,000-foot section of State Route 206 that was washed out Sunday near the entrance of Mount Spokane State Park. The state Transportation Department says repairs could cost more than $1 million, and it could take two or three days to get a single lane of traffic back open.

The Idaho State Police closed Interstate 90 off-ramps at Cataldo because water was over the roadways, although not on I-90.

Downstream, the level of Lake Coeur d'Alene had reached flood stage level, Kootenai County sheriff's spokesman Capt. Ben Wolfinger said.

"The high volume of water in the lake causes the lake to back up into the Highway 3 area, causing the Coeur d'Alene River and the Chain Lakes to flood from Cataldo to Harrison," Wolfinger said in a news release.

Many camping areas and boat launches will probably be closed for the upcoming Memorial Day Holiday.

The city of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, closed docks at Independence Point and restricted access to the parking lot.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management's Huckleberry Campground on the St. Joe River in Idaho also was closed.

"It is unfortunate that the flooding is coinciding with what is traditionally the big kickoff period for the summer season," BLM Field Manager Eric Thomson said in a news release.

Hi Glenn,

Sorry, I am a little slow in getting these to you. I have a new camera and I had to figure out how to get the pictures from the camera into the computer. Quite some doing for me!!

I think I made it!!

We had some more snow yesterday and had sunshine today and more snow coming tonight. I have done enough snow blowing for the next 10 years. Don and I work in shifts, today he tried to shovel the snow that came from the roof on the back patio out of the window wells for down stairs. He made it, but had to shovel snow over the top of the pile. Look at the picture and you will see it. I do have some more pictures, but will send them later.

Love,Jane
